WHAT IS A NFT?
NFTs provide proof of ownership and authenticity.
♦ ️An NFT transfers the digital ownership of a file.
NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token. What does non-fungible mean? Non- fungible means that it's unique and can't be replaced with something else, 💡 think of a one of a kind player trading card. Whereas, Fungible is something that can be replaced or traded, think of currency or money you can trade 1 dollar for another dollar it will have the exact same value, bitcoin is another example of a fungible token where it will always be valued the same.
NFTs are unique digital items such as collectibles or artworks or game items. As an artist, by tokenizing your work you both ensure that it is unique and brand it as your work. The actual ownership is blockchain-managed.
When NFTs are created it’s called “minting”
Minting is the process of tokenizing your work and creating an NFT.
what can be an NFT? 🎨 artwork 🖼 illustrations 🎶music 📸 photography 📹 videos 🏀 sports highlights 🖌 design portfolios all can become NFTs. The possibilities are endless!
🦋NFTs are digitally unique, no two NFTs are the same.
📝Every NFT must have an owner and this is of public record and easy for anyone to verify.
🌍Content creators can sell their work anywhere and can access a global market.
🔏Creators can retain ownership rights over their own work, and claim resale royalties directly.
📲Even turn their Instagram posts into NFTs.
How does it work?
NFT is a certificate of ownership. Think of it like a digital deed.
NFTs can be resold–a royalty system is prgrammed into the code. Each time an NFT is sold the creator gets paid.
NFTs are putting economic control back into the hands of people and not corporations.
📌We see NFTs as an opportunity for feminist artists but are cautious of the environmental impact. As with any new technology, the blockchain technology has its challenges. The environmental impact being one of them. We encourage you to do your own research before diving into the NFT and blockchain world 🌀
A few key points to note:
The environmental impact is a genuine concern in blockchain technology and is wider than the NFT discussion. NFTs are a small part of the blockchain transaction activities, with cryptocurrencies being the biggest contributor.
Like every new technology it takes time to address such challenges. The industry is already working on this through transitioning from a ‘proof of work’ model to a significantly more energy efficient ‘proof of stake’ model. There are already blockchains networks and marketplaces that are starting to establish themselves in this space and will gain more traction as NFTs move to mass adoption.
NFTs are revolutionizing the traditional art industry and hold immense potential for social impact. NFTs empower the artist by eliminating or reducing the role of middle-man, curators and art galleries who have been exploiting the artists for centuries.
