Community Guidelines

Our Commitment

We are a community coming together to care and take action. We are working to provide a space for intersectional feminism that reflects our diversity. Our intersectional feminism is informed by on frame works by Kimberlé Crenshaw and bell hooks. We exist to amplify the voices, messages, and platforms of a multifaceted network of change makers, educators, and creators and artists.

  1. We work with a team of advisors to ensure increased impact and authenticity–supported by research–in everything we say and do as a platform.

  2. We are working to continuously provide our community with resources relating to various causes and organizations which you can support.

  3. Discover different BIPOC, women, and LGBTQIA+ owned businesses that you can consider supporting.

  4. We are working to ensure a place of mutual respect that fosters growth and learning for all community members. See below on how to positively be a part of our community.

  5. We are working to continue to uplift, amplify, and honor the  voices and work of a much larger network of creators. (Posting only with BOTH credit and consent).

  6. We will continually encourage our community to support, follow, and further amplify the work of our larger network of creative partners featured in our posts.

  7. It is of utmost importance that we share accurate, intentional and helpful information.

Sharing

We are the messengers–your voice is the message.

This is a community made up of a diverse global network of voices and creators. Before sharing we always:

  1. Ask for consent from the creator and participants:
All messages you see elevated on our platform, have been posted with the expressed consent of the creators and participants featured.

  2. Ask for consent for comments to be turned on:
You may see some posts where comments are turned off, this is because the creator has requested comments to be disabled. Social media is a reflection of the real world and as we fight for change in a digital space we have witnessed disproportionate harassment and bullying aimed at those that we uplift. While we do moderate comments, in some cases, a creator will request that comments be disabled. This is how we work to uplift and honor the work on the terms of those who created it. Feel free to engage in a discussion with your online or in-person community about the subject. Just because the comments are off, doesn’t mean the discussion shouldn’t happen.

  3. Credit and Tag the Creators:
It is essential that we provide the space for our community to engage with and be introduced to creators through our platform. We encourage you to follow the accounts we share. To ensure this we always credit in the first line of the caption and tag all creators and participants in the message. If you do not see a tag, it may be through the request of the creator.

  4. If requested by the creator, we will remove a post no questions asked
If you are the creator or featured in a post and would like the post removed from our platform please send us a direct message and we will remove it with no questions asked. If you don’t hear from us within 24 hours please send us an email to partner@feminists.co

  5. Ensure the message is aligned with our values and positively impactful. There are many ways to be a feminist and we seek to uplift those who follow “Feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression” (Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center, bell Hooks 1984) through a lens of intersectionality, ‘honoring the multiple identities–race, sex, gender, class, disability, sexual orientations, ect.–in addition to the ways these identities relate to systems of privilege and oppression’ (Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race and Sex, Kimberlé Crenshaw 1989). If a post or a creator does not align with these key values, we will not elevate them

Respect Creators

Every person and message elevated on this platform has consented to be a part of this space. That should be honored. Here are some ways we work to achieve this and how you can help as well.

  1. Mutual respect comes first. This means recognizing even in moments of disagreement, respect for the autonomy of other people must be considered. If you disagree with a message shared by one of our featured creators. That is okay. Remember that disagreement does not entitle us to an argument or a debate with that person. Accordingly, do not attack people publicly or privately. Not only is this a violation of Instagram’s rules, but also against the values of intersectional feminism.

  2. Feminist will block and report any accounts that harass creators, because we must enforce boundaries to keep our platform a safe space.

  3. If you love the work a creator makes– we encourage you to follow and support them! Try to comment on their posts instead of sending them a direct message. This helps elevate them on the Instagram algorithm as a form of engagement and direct messages can be invasive or overwhelming. Some creators have their own boundaries around DM’s, so look for those in their bio or IG highlights.

Comments on Instagram

Communication and dialogue are important parts of online communities. Follow these guidelines to keep dialogue intentional and respectful.

  1. Respect the creators and their message, even if you disagree with it. Remember that behind every post, is a person.

  2. Before you comment ask yourself this:

“is it harmful or helpful?”
“Does this belong in a personal journal vs a public forum?”

“Are you dehumanizing someone?”

“Does my comment add positively or productively to the community?”

  1. Ask questions instead of making assumptions when appropriate. We understand some may be looking for guidance in our comment sections, questions are welcome when they come from a place of mutual respect. Posing personal attacks as a question is not the same thing as genuinely looking for new information and understanding. Disrespect and dehumanization will be restricted accordingly.

  2. In an effort to ensure safety we will not allow comments on images and art surrounding bodies. We do not feel an image of a human body is grounds for discourse. Just enjoy the art and leave it at that!

  3. We reserve the right to restrict negative comments that are harmful to the community.

Ways you Can Help

Here are some ways you can help our team keep the community respectful and intentional.

  1. See something that makes you smile?
Like it. Whether it is a message you agree with or a comment that encourages the creator, your “like” elevates that comment higher on the post.

  2. See something that is harmful?
Report harmful comments using Instagram’s safety tool. Be specific when reporting so it will be more likely to be addressed. If you’re comfortable, let us know. We are doing our  best to ensure the safety of the community but we are a small team and with so many community members, something may be missed, but not intentionally. For urgent matters email us at: (team@feminists.co) We really appreciate your help in keeping Feminist a welcoming and respectful community.

  3. Share with your own community
You can help us make even more impact by sharing the work of the creators and activists with your extended community.
