Artist Feature: Paz Bernstein

Paz Bernstein (1992), a filmmaker and animator, creates provocative and feminist work. In recent years, she has helped organize protests against sexual assaulters, and has also created an artistic installation against the former prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu. Currently, she is working on her new short film, which is about the collective trauma of women at gynecology appointments at the "Open Workshop" artist residency in Denmark. In her spare time, she illustrates and animates short clips about sexuality, body positivity, and intimate moments. Although some may find her work taboo, she creates her art in a humorous way, in hope that this can make everything easier to digest.

Q: Can you share something you've learned from creating this body of work that would resonate with our community?

P: I have come to a realization that all of the subjects that are considered taboo, and that are not as openly talked about, are the most normal, day to day stuff. A humorous and light representation in animation and illustrations makes the conversation about these subjects so much easier and makes people feel more open to talk about them.

Q: Tell us about your work process! Do you plan your images ahead or are you more improvisational?

P: Usually my work is very inspired by my life. that means that if I am on my period- I will probably have an idea surrounding period, and all my energy will be focused on giving life to this new representation. A lot of times I will have an idea in my head but when I put it together it becomes something different, and i let it be.

Q: What is your advice to young and aspiring photographers?

P: My advice for artists in general is- if you have an idea, DO IT. No time to waste and so much stigma and taboos to break! Get it going and don’t worry about what people might think.

Q: Do you have any upcoming events or exhibitions you'd like to share?

P: I am currently working on a new short animation film about appointments at the gynecologist- a collective trauma. It is based on 56 testimonies by women from all ages and on my own experiences as well. The film will shed light on the mistreatment of gynecologists and the depths of the irony. It is due to be finished by the end of 2022.
