MEET 11 INDIVIDUALS WORKING TO BUILD AN INCLUSIVE, ACCESSIBLE FUTURE FOR ALL

International Day of Persons with Disabilities is a United Nations observed day held on December 3rd each year that is about promoting the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities at every level of society and development, and raising awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in all aspects of political, social, economic, and cultural life. (World Health Organization) According to the United Nations round 15 percent of the world's population, or estimated 1 billion people, live with disabilities. It’s not enough to be inclusive, we must prioritize disabled lives today and recognize their worth.

 

Sukhjeen Kaur

is the Founder and CEO of Chronically Brown, a non-profit organisation working towards tackling the stigma of disability within the South Asian community. She started Chronically Brown as a result of her own experiences of people not understanding or accepting her disabilities.

Jessica Kellgren-Fozard

is a deaf and disabled activist and content creator whose content encompasses not just vintage lifestyle and fashion but also disability and LGBTQ+ awareness.

 

Haben Girma

is a human rights lawyer, author, and advocate dedicated to advancing disability justice. Specifically, she is passionate about helping increase access to books and other digital information for persons with disabilities. In 2013, Girma became the first Deafblind person to graduate from Harvard Law School.

 

Imani Barbarin

is a disability rights and inclusion activist and speaker who uses her voice and 
social media platforms to create conversations engaging the disability community. 
Born with cerebral palsy, she 
writes and uses her platform 
to speak from the perspective 
of a disabled black woman.

 

Danielle Perez

is a Dominican comedian, actor, writer, & disability rights activist based in Los Angeles. She is dedicated to challenging stigmas & misconceptions about disabilities and is known for her stand-up comedy shows and roles in With Love and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

 

Vilissa Thompson

is a licensed master social worker (LMSW), disability rights advocate, and writer. As the founder & CEO of Ramp Your Voice!, she works to promote self-advocacy and strengthen empowerment among people with disabilities, especially Black-disabled women and femmes like herself.

 

Syanne Centeno

is an autistic BIPOC disability rights activist, professional model, content creator, podcast host, and writer. As she studies Political Science in college, she continues to advocate for accessibility and disability justice.

 

Isabel Mavrides-Calderón

is a Latina disability rights activist and community organizer. She has successfully helped lead campaigns to take down Supreme Court cases, such as CVS Vs. DOE and Payan Vs. LACCD, that threatened to gut the Americans With Disabilities Act.

 

Annie Segarra

is a content creator and intersectional activist who runs a YouTube channel called "Annie Elainey". As 
a queer, Latinx, disabled 
and chronically ill (w/ Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome) woman 
of color and of size, Annie offers an intersectional lens to many issues.

 

Tobi Green-Adenowo

is a Black, Disabled, Queer Muslim woman who also grew up in 18 foster homes. In high school, she changed the National Curriculum for GCSE Dance so that disabled dance students can be marked fairly. And now she’s aiming to create a TV Network & TV shows for the disabled community @toughcookietee @disabledpowernetwork.
