These organizations are addressing the immediate needs of those currently unhoused and working to eradicate homelessness.

Why this is a feminist issue?

Women of color have historically faced discriminatory housing practices, including redlining and exclusionary policies, restrictions on women's financial independence, such as the inability to apply for credit cards before 1974, and have borne the brunt of persistent gender and racial wage gaps. These injustices contribute to the ongoing housing disparities experienced by women. Advocating for housing justice means advocating for racial, gender justice, and a more feminist future for all!

 

The Ali Forney Center

is the nation's largest nonprofit providing shelter and healthcare services to LGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness in New York City. A 24-hour program, The Ali Forney Center never closes its doors. From initial intake at their drop-in center to transitional housing and job readiness training, they provide homeless LGBTQ+ youth a safe, warm, supportive environment to escape the streets.

Transanta

is a mutual aid project that connects anonymous gift-givers with trans youth who are unhoused, in foster care, or otherwise without the crucial support they need to thrive. Transanta exists to show trans youth that they are loved and supported, and that they have a family of people around the world who care for them, believe in them, and want them to succeed.

 

I Support The Girls

is a non-profit providing bras, underwear, and menstrual hygiene products to women and gender-expansive people experiencing homelessness and surviving natural disasters. Through their global affiliates, I Support The Girls has donated over 21 million products to those in need.

 

Coalition for the Homeless

is the nation’s oldest advocacy and direct service organization helping homeless individuals and families. They believe that affordable housing, sufficient food, and the chance to work for a living wage are fundamental rights in a civilized society. Since their inception, the Coalition has worked through litigation, public education, and direct services to ensure that these goals are realized.

 

The National Coalition for the Homeless

is a network of people who are currently experiencing or who have experienced homelessness advocating for increased public investment in affordable housing, services, and resources for housing stability. Their mission is to end and prevent homelessness while ensuring the immediate needs of those experiencing homelessness are met and their civil rights are respected and protected.
